Built Heritage

The Built Heritage team is made up of architectural historians, conservation architects, buildings archaeologists, chartered surveyors and chartered planners. Our team has previous experience in local government conservation and design, in Historic England and in commercial architectural practice. With a client base that draws from both the public and private sector CgMs works throughout the UK. Our services range from early advice on the viability of a purchase, to consultations with Local Planning authorities and Historic England through to providing expert evidence at Public Inquiries and appeals.


Heritage Statements and Impact Assessments - CgMs regularly prepares statements for submission to the Local Planning Authority in support of application for advance planning permissions. Our reports provide reasoned and informed explanation for proposed changes within the historic environment.
Environmental Impact Assessments - Cultural Heritage chapters can be provided for on large development sites. These chapters offer objective assessment of the direct and indirect predicted effects within the historic built environment .
Planning Inquiries - CgMs provides expert witness for Planning Appeals, including l major public inquiries involving development affecting conservation areas, listed buildings and World Heritage Sites.
Design Guidance - CgMs provides owners, developers and architects with design guidance for Listed Buildings and developments within the historic environment.
Architectural and Historical Research - Research is undertaken by identifying and consulting primary source material held in archives, record offices and specialist libraries nationwide. The research of buildings, estates and sites within their contexts informs their assessment of significance and proportionate impact.
Pre-acquisition Advice/Statements of Significance - Understanding the opportunities and sensitivities within a site is essential prior to purchase. Assessment I at this stage is focused on significance and ascertaining development potential of a site with regard to national and local planning policies.
Conservation Management Plans - CgMs works alongside conservation architects to produce and advise on Conservation management Plans for historic assets with long term needs.
Enforcement Cases - CgMs can advise on enforcement cases where unauthorised works have been carried out on listed buildings.
