Bardsey Island

As part of a project reviewing and carrying out appraisals of 14 conservation areas for Gwynedd Council, the historic buildings team undertook an appraisal of the Bardsey Island conservation area.

Bedford

The character appraisal and management plan relate to an exceptionally large conservation area focused on the current town centre and surroundings, which are sub-divided into fourteen distinct character zones to provide a clear account of the varied nature and special qualities of the overall area.

Bow Street Magistrates Court

CgMs’ has been advising the development team on the redevelopment, conversion and restoration of the Grade II listed London landmark on behalf of Edward Holdings.

Bradwell

Bradwell on Sea is a village located in Essex near the Virley Channel on the Dengie Peninsular. Research was carried out to identify any heritage assets in the area that would be affected by a proposed wind farm.

Cartier

CgMs secured listed building consent and planning permission for extensive alteration to the Grade II listed 175-176 New Bond Street Cartier store. The properties are located within the Mayfair Conservation Area.

Clumber Park

Clumber Park was created in the early C18 by the Duke of Newcastle and remained the Newcastle country seat until the mid-C20, when the property was acquired by the National Trust. The whole park extends to 1538 ha. It is designated at Grade I in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Interest and over 405 hectares have the status of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Expedier House

CgMs’ Historic Buildings Team provided expert witness at a recent Public Inquiry that considered proposals for Expedier House, Portsmouth Road, Hindhead. CgMs supported the appellant’s proposal for the erection of an extra care home on the site of the unlisted Expedier House.

Graff Diamonds

CgMs provided historic building and conservation area advice and guidance to the project architect. 6-8 New Bond Street are unlisted buildings located within the Mayfair Conservation Area. It was proposed to undertake internal and external alterations to both properties to provide a flagship retail space for Graff Diamonds.

Hereford Square

 CgMs’ Historic Buildings Team successfully secured the de-listing of the above 1950s property on behalf of the owner. The property had been added Grade II to the statutory list in May 2007 though it was alleged that EH had failed to consult the owner prior to the listing of the property.

Highfields Park

The core of Highfields Park originates from landscaping created by Joseph and Alfred Lowe in the late 18th and 19th century on their estate. The Public Park was laid out in the early 1920s on the initiative of Sir Jesse Boot (founder of Boots the Chemist) and to designs by Richard Percy Morley Horder. Due to its heritage values it has been designated at grade II in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Interest.

Homerton

On behalf of the City of London, CgMs Consulting provided planning and historic buildings advice on the redevelopment of the Former Homerton College of Technology in Homerton, East London, to provide a new Academy as part of Hackney Learning Trust’s programme of school improvement. The Academy will accommodate 900, 11 – 16 year olds as well as 240 students within a sixth form.

Ladywell Bath

CgMs was commissioned by a LB Lewisham project team to prepare an initial assessment for the conversion and re-use of a Grade II listed former public baths. The report was submitted via the project architects in support of an application for funding. The site was proposed for continued community use.

The Maze Prison

CgMs was instructed by the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) of Northern Ireland, together with the Environment Heritage Service (EHS), to identify the heritage value of the site and make recommendations for the suitability of statutory protection.

Middlemoor Wind Farm

Jonathan Edis provided expert witness at appeal, handling cultural heritage matters on behalf of Npower Renewables Ltd. An 18 turbine scheme with associated plant and infrastructure was proposed.

Places of Worship

The CgMs Historic Buildings Team was commissioned by English Heritage to carry out a sample assessment of places of worship in need. This is part of the wider Heritage at Risk (HAR) project, which is intended to provide evidence of the risks to all heritage assets with the aim of guiding English Heritage in targeting its resources in this field.

Tamworth Phase 1

The Historic Buildings team undertook appraisals of three conservation areas in Tamworth, a large market town in Staffordshire. These included the town centre itself and two Victorian/Edwardian residential areas.
